aquatherm blue: piping system for heating, cooling and fan coil lines
aquatherm blue is a corrosion-resistant polypropylene (fusiolen PP-RCT) piping system developed for closed-circuit heating and cooling systems and technical pipe networks. Typical uses are chilled water and heating lines in building services and industrial buildings, and liquid cooling in data centres.
- 20–630 mm diameter range
- Oxygen-barrier OT option
- 10-year manufacturer's warranty
- Push-fit 90–450 mm

None of the problems of metal pipe in closed circuits
Corrosion-resistant polypropylene: MF RP variants in fusiolen PP-RCT, S and SDR 7.4 MF variants in fusiolen PP-R. Unlike steel and copper, the material does not degrade in service and forms no rust or deposits.
No corrosion or deposits
Rust and sludge from steel pipe clog fan coil coils and valves; polypropylene does not degrade in service and forms no deposits.
Self-insulating
Thermal conductivity 0.15 W/mK: thinner thermal and anti-condensation insulation than on metal pipe.
Low expansion with glass fibre
In MF and MF RP series, linear expansion is at least 75% lower than in standard PP pipe; the expansion coefficient is close to that of metal pipe.
Light and quick to install
For roughly 30 m of pipe: blue 7.44 kg, copper 13.5 kg, steel 48 kg (same nominal size; manufacturer's US data).
Oxygen barrier (OT)
Protects metal components such as pumps, valves and heat exchangers in closed heating circuits from oxygen diffusion (DIN 4726).
One-piece joints
Pipe and fitting are fused (heated-tool socket, butt or electrofusion welding) into a homogeneous, material-bonded single piece with no additional sealing point. Push-fit connection is an alternative in large diameters.

Why an oxygen barrier (OT) is needed
Where a heating system contains metal components such as pumps, valves and heat exchangers, oxygen diffusing through the pipe wall accelerates corrosion of those components. aquatherm blue OT pipe is built as PP-RCT layer / fibre layer / PP-RCT layer / oxygen barrier and meets the requirements of DIN 4726.
- OT pipe is peeled before welding with the peeling tool (art. no. 9800050479–9800050488); peeling depths are in the welding parameters table.
- OT socket fusion in 20–125 mm; for branches, the weld-in saddle OT can be applied later.
- Push-fit fittings and 160–250 mm electrofusion sockets are not used on OT pipe.
Joining methods

Thermal expansion
ΔL = α × L × ΔT; α = 0.035 mm/(m·K) for fibre-composite pipe, 0.15 mm/(m·K) for PP-R pipe without fibre. Example: 0.035 mm/(m·K) × 25 m × 40 K = 35 mm.
Straight fibre-composite runs need expansion compensation above 40 m; pipe without fibre every 10 m.
Pressure test
- Preliminary test: 3 × 5 min at 18 bar (aquatherm blue SDR 17.6: 10 bar); the line is depressurised between cycles.
- Main test: 15 min at 10 bar; drop at most 0.5 bar.
- Final test: 60 min at 10 bar; drop at most 0.5 bar.
The test report is signed by client and contractor; the 10-year warranty depends on this documented test.
Fixed and sliding points, storage
Clamps are selected for the outside diameter of the plastic pipe; aquatherm clamps suit both fixed and sliding points. Fixed point: 0 spacer rings; sliding point: 1 spacer ring (MF and S pipe). Swinging hangers are not used as fixed points.
Pipe may be stored outdoors at any temperature on a flat, firm surface. It is sensitive to impact below 0 °C. Outdoors in undamaged original packaging for at most 6 months.
Where is it used?

Chilled water and cooling systems
Closed-circuit chilled water and cooling loops, from server rooms to food, beverage and pharmaceutical cooling. Corrosion-resistant, diffusion-tight polypropylene is suited to carrying coolant in closed systems; for buried runs the pre-insulated version (aquatherm energy) carries it over long distances with little temperature loss.

Heating installations
Heating water distribution from the heat generator connection (heat pump, buffer tank, boiler) through plant-room and manifold installation, risers and horizontal distribution to radiator and underfloor heating supply. Connection to existing metal networks in refurbishment and external or buried lines are also covered.

HVAC connections
In air-conditioning systems steel pipe corrodes from the outside because of condensation between pipe and insulation; in heating systems internal corrosion raises pressure loss and pump energy. aquatherm blue is corrosion-resistant polypropylene, so there are no deposits, pitting or leaks.

Data centre liquid cooling
Rack power densities in AI servers and GPU clusters are rising from 65 kW to more than 150 kW; such loads make liquid cooling mandatory. aquatherm blue is used in closed chilled water loops, heat exchanger cooling, containment and free cooling systems and direct-to-chip (DLC) connections.

Chilled water and cooling systems
Industrial cooling — free cooling and cooling towers above 20 °C; compression chillers from −40 °C to +10 °C with water-glycol, water-alcohol and brine; comfort cooling at 6–20 °C.
Heating installations
Selection criteria: temperature range, pressure, hydraulically controllable pressure losses, permanently tight joints; OT pipe may be needed where pumps, valves or heat exchangers are present.
HVAC connections
Thermal conductivity 0.15 W/mK: less heat, cold and anti-condensation insulation than metal pipe; sound-insulating; low weight.
Data centre liquid cooling
Smooth bore (friction coefficient 0.007) for low pressure loss and pump energy; secondary fluid networks with dielectric fluids; transition systems from copper or PEX for phased expansion and retrofit.

Warranty and system
Catalogue: a 10-year manufacturer's warranty on all pipes and fittings instead of the 2 years required by German law; the warranty takes effect with a pressure test carried out and documented to the aquatherm specification.
System components: straight lengths and coils, a fittings programme shared with aquatherm green, flange adapters, PP-to-metal transitions, weld-in saddle branches, manifolds, valves, welding equipment and clamps.
Market launch: 2002 (catalogue history); the diameter range was extended to 630 mm in 2010.

Which cooling applications is aquatherm blue used for?
Closed-circuit chilled water systems in building services and industry: from chilled water and cooling lines to liquid cooling in data centres.
Which heating applications is it suitable for?
Closed heating circuits, from single- and two-pipe heating systems to industrial heating loops.
Which variants are available?
S, MF, MF UV, MF OT, MF RP, MF RP UV and MF RP OT; 20–630 mm, SDR 7.4 / 9 / 11 / 17.6.
Which standards apply to planning and installation?
DIN 1988, DVS 2207/2208 and ISO 10508; details are in the installation documentation.
Why does oxygen tightness matter?
If the system contains metal components such as pumps, valves or heat exchangers, oxygen entering through the pipe wall accelerates corrosion; in that case OT pipe should be selected.
Can it be combined with components of other materials?
Yes, provided it is verified that the operating parameters defined for PP do not harm the other components and vice versa. The fact that aquatherm pipe resists a medium does not mean the metal components in the system do; metal parts may need corrosion protection.
Can blue pipe be used for drinking water?
For drinking water, use the drinking-water-approved aquatherm green. aquatherm blue is intended for closed-circuit heating and cooling and technical pipe networks.
