Why aquatherm green

Eight concrete advantages

Not marketing adjectives: measurable properties from the manufacturer's catalogue.

No corrosion

Polypropylene does not rust; no corrosion protection is needed and there is no scaling or corrosion-related leakage.

Hygienic, drinking-water approved

Free of plasticisers and heavy metals, odourless and tasteless. Hygienic suitability is documented by Hygiene-Institut Gelsenkirchen test reports and confirmed by continuous testing. Fusion joints mean no adhesives, solder or flux in the installation.

Homogeneous welded joint

Pipe and fitting are briefly heated and joined; the joint has double wall thickness and is stronger than the pipe itself. A 20 mm pipe is welded in 5 seconds and can be pressure tested or commissioned without a waiting period.

Low linear expansion (MF series)

Fibre-composite pipe expands at least 75% less than standard PP (α = 0.035 mm/(m·K) versus 0.15 for single-layer pipe); the coefficient is close to that of metal pipe, so support spacing is wider.

Opaque, low flow noise

The pipe is opaque, so there is no risk of algae growth inside; flow noise is lower than in metal pipe.

Low thermal conductivity

Thermal conductivity of 0.15 W/mK; less insulation is needed than for metal pipe (an advantage against condensation, for example in marine service lines).

Light weight

Lighter than steel and copper; PP pipe production uses up to 60% less energy and up to 85% less weight than metal (TEPPFA cradle-to-grave study). Marine page: steel 7,800 kg/m³, PP 980 kg/m³.

Environment

EPDs to ISO 14025 / EN 15804 (green/blue S/MF, UV, OT, ENERGY groups); the material is recyclable; aquatherm is a DGNB member. The company is certified to ISO 9001 (1996), 14001 (2012) and 50001 (2013).

There is no "SDR 7.4 MF RP" variant in the manufacturer's sources. For short sections, aquatherm's UV-resistant tape (art. no. 9700010871) can be used instead of UV-layered pipe; it is wrapped on a dry, clean surface with at least 50% overlap. Pipe is delivered in UV-protective packaging; outdoor storage only in undamaged original packaging and for at most 6 months from delivery. Take care against impact below 0 °C. The PN25 / PN20 / PN10 equivalence used in the Turkish market does not appear in the manufacturer's sources; select from the pressure-temperature table below. MF diameter range: 20–32 mm on the aquatherm.de product page, 20–250 mm in the catalogue article list; the current catalogue governs project selection.

How to read SDR

SDR = outside diameter ÷ wall thickness. For a 20 × 1.9 mm pipe, 20 / 1.9 ≈ 11. At the same diameter an SDR 7.4 pipe has a thicker wall; SDR 9 MF RP, thanks to PP-RCT and glass fibre, achieves a higher temperature-pressure rating and more flow with a thinner wall.

Standard lengths

4 m straight lengths up to 125 mm, 5.8 m from 160 mm. 20 and 25 mm S pipe can also be supplied in coils. Quantities in quotes are rounded to full lengths.

For media other than water and drinking water, material-medium compatibility is checked separately (chemical resistance table). Segment fitting factor 0.75.

Short-term peaks of 100 °C are not a problem; continuous 70–90 °C shortens pipe life (see the pressure table). Intermittent system disinfection: at most twice a year, 50 mg/l free chlorine for at most 12 hours, or 150 mg/l H₂O₂ for at most 24 hours; 30 °C must not be exceeded during treatment. Chlorine dioxide must never be used. Continuously chlorinated drinking water: up to 0.3 mg/l free chlorine, at most 70 °C. Clamps and fixed points

Clamps are selected for the outside diameter of the plastic pipe and must not damage the pipe surface (aquatherm clamps art. no. 9600060516–9600060660). Fixed points divide the line into sections and are dimensioned to carry expansion forces and additional loads. Swinging hangers are not used as fixed points. In risers, no expansion piece is needed if there is a fixed point immediately before and after each branch.

Sliding points and vertical lines

Sliding clamps must allow axial movement; nearby fittings or valves must not obstruct it. MF and S pipe: sliding point 1 spacer ring, fixed point 0 spacer rings. In vertical lines clamp spacing may be increased by about 20%.

Unit: cm (the PDF gives no unit; values of 60–325 are interpreted as cm). Values for 40 mm and above are not given in the installation principles PDF; consult the manufacturer for support spacing in larger diameters. Images and technical data: aquatherm GmbH (aquatherm green technical catalogue 09.2023, installation principles AS1059 and aquatherm.de). Values are as published by the manufacturer; the current catalogue governs project calculations.

Hot water circulation rules

  • The highest hot water temperature in the system should not exceed 60 °C; some regulations set a 50 °C limit at the tap.
  • Thermal disinfection (for example in healthcare) may be carried out briefly at 70 °C and above; the limits of the pressure table must not be exceeded.
  • Flow velocity should not exceed 0.5 m/s anywhere in the system (up to 1 m/s in special cases).
  • A hydraulic balancing valve is mandatory in every circulation loop.
  • When connecting to an existing copper system, measure the copper content of the water; 0.1 mg/l (ppm) must not be exceeded. Damage caused by copper corrosion is excluded from the warranty.
  • Avoid water hammer and excessive pressure fluctuation; select the pump head to suit the installation.

These rules apply only to drinking water hot water circulation systems, not to cold water, heating or cooling systems.

Mixed installations and disinfection

Even if aquatherm pipe is resistant to a medium, other components in the installation (valves, pumps, check valves, strainers) may not be; the compatibility of all components with the medium must be verified before installation. PP needs no protection, but metal components may be prone to corrosion.

Thermal disinfection to DVGW W 551 is possible: at least 3 minutes at 70 °C at every point of the system. Continuously chlorinated drinking water: up to 0.3 mg/l free chlorine, at most 70 °C. Chlorine dioxide is not permitted.

Installation

Joining methods and welding parameters

All methods are fusion based: pipe and fitting become one piece under heat, without gaskets or adhesives. Welding standard: DVS 2207 Part 11 (general rules for heated-tool socket welding).

Joining methods
MethodDiameter range / note
Socket fusion (hand tool)20–63 mm
Socket fusion (welding machine)50–125 mm
Electric welding jig63–125 mm
Butt welding160–630 mm (largest green pipe: 315 mm)
Electrofusion socket20–250 mm; hard-to-reach locations. Not applied directly to injection-moulded fittings — a pipe section is welded in between.
Weld-in saddleBranches added later; listed on the aquatherm.de green processing page, diameter range not given for green
Push-fit fittingsUp to 40% faster than electrofusion, fewer tools; the catalogue lists 90–450 mm SDR 11 / 17.6 push-fit parts

160–630 mm are joined by butt welding. AQE times are aquatherm's recommendation for ambient temperatures below +5 °C.

Pressure test

  • Medium: water; test pressure 10 bar. A 10 K temperature difference causes a 0.5–1 bar pressure deviation, so keep the test medium at a constant temperature.
  • Preliminary test: 3 × 5 minutes at 18 bar (to stretch and relax the pipe); pressure is released between cycles. (10 bar for SDR 17.6.)
  • Main test: 15 minutes at 10 bar immediately after the preliminary test; drop at most 0.5 bar.
  • Final test: 60 minutes (75 min in total); drop at most 0.5 bar. The gauge must read 0.1 bar and is fitted at the lowest point where possible.
  • Report: signed by client and contractor with place and date (form on p. 20 of the installation principles). A documented pressure test is a warranty condition.

Insulation

Minimum insulation to EnEV/GEG on hot water lines; anti-condensation insulation on cold lines. Installation principles pp. 14–15 give a humidity-temperature condensation table for 75/110/160 mm.

aquatherm green — frequently asked questions

Where is aquatherm green used?

In water lines that require permanent leak-tightness, corrosion resistance and hygiene: drinking water, ships and yachts, swimming pools and leisure facilities, agriculture and chemical media.

Which variants are available?

Single-layer S (SDR 6, 7.4, 11), fibre-reinforced MF (SDR 7.4), raised-pressure MF RP (SDR 9) and, for outdoor use, the UV-layered MF UV / MF RP UV. Selection depends on pressure, temperature and ambient conditions.

Is there a PN rating?

aquatherm documents use SDR classes and temperature/lifetime-based working pressure tables rather than PN. The PN25 / PN20 / PN10 equivalence used in the Turkish market does not appear in the manufacturer's sources; pressure selection must be made from the table.

What should be observed during installation?

Joints are made by fusion without adhesives or sealants; in mixed installations the media compatibility of all components is checked in advance; in hot water circulation, temperature, flow velocity and hydraulic balancing must comply with the standards.

What pressure does aquatherm green withstand?

For drinking water at 20 °C and 50 years of operation: SDR 11 S 12.9 bar, SDR 7.4 S 20.4 bar, SDR 6 S 25.7 bar, SDR 7.4 MF 24.5 bar, SDR 9 MF RP 23.1 bar. At 70 °C for 50 years SDR 9 MF RP gives the highest value at 10.2 bar. The full table is on this page.

What water temperature is aquatherm pipe suitable for?

The highest hot water temperature in the system should not exceed 60 °C; some regulations set 50 °C at the tap. Thermal disinfection to DVGW W 551 is possible: at least 3 minutes at 70 °C at every point of the system. Short-term peaks of 100 °C are not a problem; continuous 70–90 °C shortens pipe life (see the pressure table).

What are the welding temperature and times?

Socket fusion is carried out to DVS 2207-11; for a 20 mm pipe: heating 5 s, joining 4 s, cooling 2 min, welding depth 14.5 mm. The parameter table up to 125 mm is on this page; 160 mm and above are butt welded.

What are the warranty conditions?

10 years on all pipes and fittings, backed by an insurance policy; it starts on the delivery date and takes effect with a documented pressure test to the aquatherm specification. Years 1–5: EUR 20 million per claim, EUR 40 million per year; years 6–10: EUR 8.5 million per claim, EUR 17 million per year. Cover: property damage, financial loss and personal injury.

What is the service life of aquatherm green?

Pressure-temperature values are extrapolated for a 50-year service life; the manufacturer's catalogue states "more than 50 years". The general applications table also gives 100-year rows for 10–50 °C.

How do I get the 2026 price list?

List prices are set by the manufacturer in foreign currency and project or quantity discounts apply, so the PDF price list and a project quote go together. Use the quote form on this page or the price list page (Turkish).
